Sexual Health & The Importance of Creating Good Habits

Okay, let’s talk about the good stuff—sexual health. As September is Sexual Health Month, it seems like a great time to learn some tips on how to create good habits.

Sexual health encompasses a lot of different categories as it correlates to the impact of mental, physical, and emotional wellness in relation to sex. It’s pretty simple—sex affects health and health affects sex. In this article, we’ll highlight four habits that can help you improve your sexual well-being.

#1 Schedule routine checks

Although your doctor probably won’t look like McDreamy, that doesn’t mean that you should neglect wellness checks! Get into the habit of scheduling routine doctor’s visits to make sure your sexual health is in tip-top shape.

This means that having pelvic exams, STI tests, pap smears, and vaccines should be on your to-do list. Not only this, but regular doctor visits for your overall health are important, too. It will allow you to assess your overall health as certain medical issues can affect your sex life and reproduction.

#2 Embrace your sexuality

Embrace your sexuality by being unapologetically you. Don’t let someone else determine how you feel about the number of people you’ve been with romantically (or haven’t been with), your kinks, your fantasies, or even who your sexual partners are.

Feel empowered during sex to do the things that you find pleasurable. As long as your romantic partner is comfortable, go for it. Try those handcuffs, use that rope, or wear that outfit (you know the one). If you don’t have these in your arsenal yet, try browsing the selection at one of these Lovers Playground locations.

Make it a habit to accept your sexual preferences/appetite or lack thereof, and do what makes you feel the best. Desire isn’t something to be shameful of. The more you own your body and your sexuality, the better your sexual health can be.

#3 Get Educated

To create good sexual health habits, you need to understand some of the important topics it encompasses. Sexual difficulties, STIs, pregnancy, gender identity, and more are just a few relevant topics. Getting educated on these things can help you navigate them easier.

For example, understanding what conditions like erectile dysfunction or a tilted uterus are is crucial. If it was to happen to you or your romantic partner, you’d want to be able to handle it in an educated and comforting fashion.

Understanding that lube is helpful for those with a tilted uterus due to pain during sex or that medications, like Viagra, are extremely helpful to men with ED is important. It proves that you understand aspects of sexual health beyond STIs and checkups.

#4 Have Fun!

For some people, their pleasure can take a backseat during sex in exchange for their partner’s. Neglecting your pleasure often in favor of someone else’s can lead you to forget what sex is supposed to be— fun.

Get into the habit of making sure that when you have sex, you have a great time. Who wants a lifetime of mediocre sex when you can have a lifetime of explosive sex instead? To up the fun factor, take control of your pleasure.

If you aren’t a fan of a position or need a softer or tougher touch, make sure your partner knows! Communicate, adjust, then execute. Not only that but, try new things. Sex doesn’t always need to be in the bedroom. Take things to the kitchen, the walk-in closet, or the shower.
